Hofstede developed this cultural model primarily on the basis of differences in values and beliefs regarding work goals. According to Geert Hofstede, 5 a Dutch social psychologist, culture is “the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the member of one group or category of people from another.” It tells people who they are, which behaviors are appropriate, and which are not acceptable in any society. However, the most-used and best-known framework for cultural differences is Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions. The Hofstede Centre defines culture as “the collective programming of the mind distinguishing members of one group or category of people from others” (Hofstede, “National Culture”). Based from his studies five dimensions were developed.

#1: Power Distance Please note that culture is defined as the collective mental programming of the human mind which distinguishes one group of people from another. This programming influences patterns of thinking which are reflected in the meaning people attach to various aspects of life and which become crystallised in the institutions of a society. Hofstede is a Dutch social scientist who developed his model by surveying over 88,000 employees in IBM subsidiaries from 72 countries. Hofstede developed this cultural model primarily on the basis of differences in values and beliefs regarding work goals. Hofstede’s fifth cultural index, long-term orientation, describes the extent to which members of a society perceive a consistent, interconnected thread running through the past, present, and future. In countries with high LTO scores, people are inclined to act pragmatically in the present in order to prepare for the future.

Cultures in high-latitude climate (moderate or cold climates) tend to have low PDI scores.

However, the most-used and best-known framework for cultural differences is Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions.

Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory, developed by Geert Hofstede, is a framework used to understand the differences in culture across countries and to discern the ways that business is done across different cultures. Geert Hofstede, assisted by others, came up with six basic issues that society needs to come to term with in order to organize itself. These are called dimensions of culture. Each of them has been expressed on a scale that runs roughly from 0 to 100. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory is a framework for cross-cultural communication. It describes the effects of a society’s culture on the values of its members, and how these values relate to behavior, using a structure derived from factor analysis.

In his bestselling book Culture's Consequences, Geert Hofstede proposed four dimensions on which the differences among national cultures can be understood:  2, Culture's Consequences, Geert Hofstede, 1984, In his bestselling book Culture's 3, Masculinity and Femininity, Geert Hofstede, 1998-05-13, Masculinity and  av H Correa da Cunha · 2019 — Characteristics for Hofstede's (1980) National Culture Dimensions . But although Hofstede made a valuable contribution to cross-cultural communication and understanding, the software of the mind does not rule or explain actual behaviours.
